Join us for a Q&A with editor Peggy Tachdjian, ACE as she discusses her biographical crime drama series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
Following the massive success of Dahmer, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true-crime anthology series returns with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, chronicling the case of the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez.
While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed - and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole - that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters? (Description courtesy of Netflix)

Join us for a Q&A with editor Monique Zavistovski, ACE & additional editor Lori Lovoy-Goranas they discuss their documentary Will & Harper.
Three years ago, Will Ferrell was filming a movie when he received a most surprising email: his dear friend of nearly 30 years was coming out to him as a trans woman.
That friend was Harper Steele, a writer he met on his first day at Saturday Night Live back in 1995. From that fateful first meeting in the halls of 30 Rock, Will knew he had found a match made in comedy, and their friendship and creative partnership would only continue to grow over the next 3 decades.
In this intimate, honest, and heartfelt documentary, Will and Harper hit the open road together to process this new stage of their friendship and reintroduce Harper to the country that she loves this time, as herself. Over 16 days, the two drive from New York to LA, visiting stops that are meaningful to them, to their friendship, and to America. Through laughter, tears, and many cans of Pringles, they push past their comfort zones as they re-examine their relationships to these spaces, and to each other, in this new light. Anderson delves into a loose interpretation of Scientology with a side-helping of John Steinbeck’s life with this unsettling drama. Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is a troubled, boozy drifter struggling with the trauma of World War II and whatever inner demons ruled his life before that. On a fateful night in 1950, Freddie boards a passing boat and meets Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the charismatic leader of a religious movement called the Cause. Freddie tries hard to adhere to Dodd’s weird teachings and forms a close bond with his mentor, even as other members of Dodd’s inner circle see him as a threat. We’re wrapping up our third season of American Cinema Editors presents at Metrograph with a special August film, David Wain’s cult classic Wet Hot American Summer, with a Q&A to follow with the film’s editor Meg Reticker, moderated by Mollie Goldstein, ACE.
The 2001 comedy features an ensemble cast festuring Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper (his film debut) and Michael Showater, who wrote the screenplay with Wain.
The film takes place during the last full day at a fictional summer camp in 1981, and spoofs the sex comedies aimed at teen audiences of that era.
Roger Ebert gave the film one star out of four. In contrast, Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman awarded the film an “A” and named it one of the ten best films of the year. Actress Kristen Bell stated on NPR on September 2, 2012, that Wet Hot American Summer was her favorite film, having watched it "hundreds of times."

Join us for a Q&A with cinematographer Greig Fraser, ACS, ASC as he discusses his work on the epic space opera Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. A total departure from the films that preceded it, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story puts the "wars" in Star Wars. Telling the story of a group of rebels trying to steal the Death Star plans, Rogue One is an intense war film full of dazzling set pieces, a hero to root for (courtesy of Felicity Jones' powerful performance in the lead), and a gritty visual aesthetic, courtesy of the innovative cinematographer Greig Fraser. Harkening back to darker installments like The Empire Strikes Back, Rogue One captures the sense of wonder that made so many generations fall in love with this franchise in the first place.

American Cinema Editors Presents ... A Screening of The Aviator's Wife on 35mm Followed by a Q&A with Editor Mary Stephen
Sunday, October 5, 5:15pm
Metrograph, New York City
We’re welcoming acclaimed editor Mary Stephen after a 35mm screening of Éric Rohmer’s 1981 comedy The Aviator’s Wife. Mary was assistant editor on the film, working with editor Cécile Decugis, the start of a long collaboration with Rohmer as his editor. Su Friedrich will be moderating. She is an avant-garde filmmaker and writer, a pivotal figure in the establishment of Queer Cinema and the creator of the website Edited By, spotlighting the work of 206 female editors who helped revolutionize film editing. (website: https://womenfilmeditors.princeton.edu/)
Like many of Rohmer's films, The Aviator's Wife deals with the ever-evolving love lives of a group of young Parisians. The film is the first installment in Rohmer's "Comedies & Proverbs" series — a collection of six films the director made during the 1980s. Each of these films begins with a proverb, in the case of The Aviator's Wife this is: "On ne saurait penser à rien" or "It is impossible to think about nothing."
