    ACE Connect-Support Committee are pleased to present a new program to those
    who need a mindful helpful hand, ACE Summer of Support Sundays. This series is
    open to all members and editing friends. If you are not an ACE member and are interested in attending one of these events, please email Eliza at the ACE office (eliza@americancinemaeditors.com) for registration details.

    The last several years have been incredibly difficult for so many in our industry. All of
    the uncertainty around jobs and the future of our craft have created anxiety and
    overwhelm, and sometimes it can all feel like too much. Thanks to your generous
    donations these Summer of Support Sunday sessions are FREE to all those who
    need help to reduce the overwhelm and take back control of their circumstances.

    Each Sunday at 4pm PT from June 1st to EditFest Weekend August 24th, we will
    be holding a variety of mindfulness sessions both online and in-person. Come try out
    different techniques to help cope with the mental stress of these trying times. If you
    find that one connects with your sensibilities, you can pursue a further journey with
    our mindfulness specialists.

    AUGUST 16 | BEAT THE ODDS
    Social & Emotional Skill Building
    Delivered in a Framework of Drumming

    Explore how music, drumming, and rhythm can shift
    mood, reduce stress, build connection, and support
    overall mental health in this fun, highly interactive
    online workshop. Grounded in research on the use
    of the arts for healing and well-being, we’ll come
    away with a renewed sense of fortitude and practical
    tools for both self-care and serving others.
    This session is open to all – no previous musical
    experience required. Activities in this session are
    inspired by an evidence based, trauma-informed
    curriculum; Beat the Odds®: Social & Emotional
    Skill Building Delivered in a Framework of
    Drumming; and Social Emotional Arts Toolkit:
    Supportive Art, Movement, Music & Writing for
    Individuals or Groups in Any Setting

    The next West Coast "American Cinema Editors Presents" event will be a screening of the 2012 psychological drama The Master followed by a conversation with editor Leslie Jones, ACE, at Los Angeles institution Vidiots.

    Join the cult of PTA with one of his best films, and one of the best performances of the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman. Anderson delves into a loose interpretation of Scientology with a side-helping of John Steinbeck’s life with this unsettling drama. Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is a troubled, boozy drifter struggling with the trauma of World War II and whatever inner demons ruled his life before that. On a fateful night in 1950, Freddie boards a passing boat and meets Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the charismatic leader of a religious movement called the Cause. Freddie tries hard to adhere to Dodd’s weird teachings and forms a close bond with his mentor, even as other members of Dodd’s inner circle see him as a threat. Often cited as one of the best films of the century, Amy Adams, Joaquin Phoenix and Philips Seymour Hoffman were all nominated for acting Oscars for their roles.

    We’re wrapping up our third season of American Cinema Editors presents at Metrograph with a special August film, David Wain’s cult classic Wet Hot American Summer, with a Q&A to follow with the film’s editor Meg Reticker, moderated by Mollie Goldstein, ACE.

    The 2001 comedy features an ensemble cast festuring Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper (his film debut) and Michael Showater, who wrote the screenplay with Wain.

    The film takes place during the last full day at a fictional summer camp in 1981, and spoofs the sex comedies aimed at teen audiences of that era.

    Roger Ebert gave the film one star out of four. In contrast, Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman awarded the film an “A” and named it one of the ten best films of the year. Actress Kristen Bell stated on NPR on September 2, 2012, that Wet Hot American Summer was her favorite film, having watched it "hundreds of times."

    American Cinema Editors Presents ... A Screening of The Aviator's Wife on 35mm Followed by a Q&A with Editor Mary Stephen

    We’re welcoming acclaimed editor Mary Stephen after a 35mm screening of Éric Rohmer’s 1981 comedy The Aviator’s Wife. Mary was assistant editor on the film, working with editor Cécile Decugis, the start of a long collaboration with Rohmer as his editor. Su Friedrich will be moderating. She is an avant-garde filmmaker and writer, a pivotal figure in the establishment of Queer Cinema and the creator of the website Edited By, spotlighting the work of 206 female editors who helped revolutionize film editing.     Like many of Rohmer's films, The Aviator's Wife deals with the ever-evolving love lives of a group of young Parisians. The film is the first installment in Rohmer's "Comedies & Proverbs" series — a collection of six films the director made during the 1980s. Each of these films begins with a proverb, in the case of The Aviator's Wife this is: "On ne saurait penser à rien" or "It is impossible to think about nothing."

  • American Cinema Editors Presents: A Screening of A Nightmare on Elm Street Followed by a Q&A with Rick Shaine, ACE, and Patrick McMahon, ACE (NY Event)

    American Cinema Editors (ACE) has a special event planned for Halloween season! We're pleased to welcome editors Rick Shaine, ACE, and Patrick McMahon, ACE, following a screening of Wes Craven’s horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street! Nick Taylor, host of the horror film podcast The Nick Taylor Horror Show, will be moderating.

    The first installment in a long-running franchise, the film stars Robert Englund as the iconic Freddy Krueger along with John Saxon, Ronee Blakley and Johnny Depp in his film debut. Krueger, a monstrous figure returned from the dead, murders teenagers through their dreams, as retribution against their parents who burned him alive. The film received great critical acclaim upon its release, and has since been considered to be one of the greatest horror films ever made, In 2021, A Nightmare on Elm Street was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
