A Message to Applicants

By way of introduction, my name is Ritvik Dhavale, and I’m the Coordinator of the Sundance Feature Film Program. I’m writing because we’re headed into our tenth year of the Sally Menke Editing Fellowship and we’re hoping you’re able to recommend one or more strong candidates for consideration.
I’ve attached an overview of the fellowship with information about eligibility and the application process.

  • Candidates must have served as lead editor on at least one, but no more than four fiction features, with any number of docs, shorts, etc. to their credit.
  • The Menke Fellow will serve as one of the editors at the Directors Lab, working with two of the Directing Fellows, and as such must be available to attend May 24–June 17, 2020.
  • They will also have the opportunity to work with several designated mentors during the fellowship year. Applicants must be based in the U.S.

The Sally Menke Fellow will receive invitations to the American Cinema Editors guild events, film screeners and the opportunity to vote for the Feature Film Best Editing categories as part of the ACE awards, a subscription to CinemaEditor magazine, and a free invitation to EditFest Los Angeles.
Additionally, the Fellow will receive a travel stipend to attend part of the Sundance Film Festival, where he or she will be acknowledged and Sally’s career will be highlighted at the Art of Editing Lunch.
We’re asking that you send us the name and email address of any candidates you’d like to recommend, and I will follow up by sending out a description of the program and application guidelines directly to them.
The deadline to apply is Friday, March 13th, 2020Please email any recommendations at

Let me know if you have any questions. We’re grateful for your help, and look forward to being in touch!

Over many years, Sally Menke was an inspired mentor to Sundance Institute filmmakers and editors. As one of the Creative Advisors, she was dynamic, focused, generous, and passionate about the creative process. She loved the editing room and spent hours with the Fellows who sought her out.

She used her own experiences and skills to help the filmmakers bring their visions to life and offered her advice with generosity and kindness.  Her many credits include Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, All the Pretty Horses, Kill Bill and Inglourious Basterds.

In memory of Sally’s artistry and love of mentoring, Sundance Institute has created the Sally Menke Memorial Editing Fellowship to support an emerging narrative editor in furthering their understanding of craft in the independent film space, expanding their artistic community and providing momentum to their editing career.
