Join ACE for a "smashing" screening of Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk. Hulk i is a Marvel movie directed by Ang Lee, screenplay by James Schamus, Michael France and John Turman, based on characters created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Before the formula for “superhero movie” was codified to produce a never-ending stream of lookalike, soundalike films there was Lee’s Hulk, an experiment in style employing eye-popping color, frag grenade split-screen effects, and dynamic framings — the work of legendary DP Frederick Elmes — in order to create a cinematic approximation of Jack Kirby’s original comic art. The spectacle here is built on a solid foundation of character-based oedipal struggle that recalls Nick Nolte’s earlier work in Addiction, with Eric Bana as Bruce Banner/Hulk and Nolte in fine fettle as his abusive and ultimately megalomaniacal mad scientist father. Note: this film is part of a series starring Nick Nolte. The screening will be followed by a discussion between editor Tim Squyres, ACE and VFX editor (and now editor) Gary Levy, ACE.

The next "American Cinema Editors Presents" is a screening of ... The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, the 2009 romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Rebecca Miller and edited by Sabine Hoffman, ACE. This film will be shown in 35mm and the post screening Q&A will feature a discussion between Miller and Hoffman.
Buoyed by a suite of stellar performances, Miller’s romantic drama sees Robin Wright Penn’s Pippa Lee forced to confront her troubled past after it bubbles to the surface. Following her move, with her much-older husband Herb (Alan Arkin), a celebrated publisher, to a retirement community. Inching toward personal breakdown, she finds a confidante in her neighbor’s son Keanu Reeves. Blake Lively, Zoe Kazan, Julianne Moore, Monica Belluci and Winona Ryder round out the very fine ensemble cast.
Jacob Bricca, ACE will be hosting a live online screening and discussion of the legendary documentary, Lost in La Mancha, on Sat, Nov. 18 at 12pm PT.
American Cinema Editors and The Metrograph shine a light on the legendary Hal Ashby’s first career in Hollywood – as an Oscar-winning film editor. We’ll be screening The Cincinnati Kid, one of Ashby’s many collaborations with director Norman Jewison. After the screening Wyatt Smith, ACE and Nick Dawson, author of Being Hal Ashby, will discuss the innovative art of Hal Ashby’s editing and how it prepared him to become the director he ultimately became.
A sharply drawn character study set against the backdrop of Depression Era New Orleans, The Cincinnati Kid stars Steve McQueen as an up-and-coming five-card stud specialist looking to prove his mettle by taking on established poker maestro “The Man” (Edward G. Robinson). Ashby’s deft editing helps to make the card table scenes masterpieces of tension, and the central dueling duo are surrounded by a superb supporting cast that boasts Tuesday Weld, Rip Torn, Joan Blondell, and Karl Malden in its number.
