    Icons of French cinema Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva play an elderly couple facing final separation by cruel death in Haneke’s tender-yet-hard study of life at the precipice. Cinematographer Darius Khondji offers a litany of locked-down framings, brittle in their composed beauty, each marked by an elegant exactitude and slowly suffocating airlessness, while editor Monika Willi’s smooth, sure-handed cutting lends what otherwise might be a stultifyingly static work a feeling of grim, merciless momentum, sliding imperceptibly towards the Great Beyond. Perhaps Haneke’s ultimate directorial accomplishment—and, incidentally, a eulogy for the youthful dreams of the 1960s European art cinema.

    Join us for a Q&A with director/co-writer Lee Unkrich, ACE, writer Michael Arndt, producer Darla K. Anderson, supervising animator Bobby Podesta, and head of story Jason Katz, as they discuss their 2010 animated film Toy Story 3. Handling life's changes and finding emotional closure are themes that most wouldn't associate with a film about anthropomorphic toys, but that's exactly what Toy Story 3 is. With two previous installments that were instant classics and the curse of second sequels usually being disappointments, this film had a lot going against it. But, the minute Toy Story 3 hit screens, it entered the pantheon of great films due to the obvious care, intelligence, and love poured into its creation. Filled with hilarious one-liners and new characters as well as a real emotional punch and typically strong vocal performances from its talented cast and expertly edited Ken Schretzmann, ACE, Toy Story 3 is another high point from Pixar and is one of three animated features in history to be honored with an Oscar nomination for Best Picture (it won Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song).

    For the third time in three years, Bobbie O’Steen and Molly O’Steen are returning to Metrograph in NYC to discuss the editing work of the late Sam O’Steen. Our latest ACE Presents at Metrograph is Roman Polanski’s Chinatown, the second of Sam O’Steen’s collaborations with Polanski after Rosemary’s Baby. Tickets are selling very fast for this event.     Each year, the American Cinema Editors Internship Committee selects two interns from each city (Los Angeles, New York, London) and provides them with the opportunity to shadow for one week each the editing rooms of a feature, a television show, and an unscripted show. Interns also visit several facilities integral to post-production (e.g. sound stages, VFX vendors, labs, etc.). Interns are being mentored by ACE editors and previous alumni. The ACE Internship Program is geared toward anyone with a passion for editing, who is just starting their career in post-production.

    The IATSE meeting point will be on Figueroa and Chuck Hearn St. (11th St). We will gather between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM, in front of the Kobe statue, at Crypto Stadium.
