    American Cinema Editors Presents ... A Screening of Cool Hand Luke Followed by a Discussion with Bobbie & Molly O'Steen

    For the fourth time in four years, Bobbie O’Steen and Molly O’Steen are returning to Metrograph in NYC to discuss the editing work of the late Sam O’Steen. Our latest ACE Presents at Metrograph is Cool Hand Luke.

    Cool Hand Luke is a 1967 American prison drama directed by Stuart Rosenberg, starring Paul Newman in the title role. The cast also features George Kennedy, Strother Martin and Jo Van Fleet. The film is about a nonconformist convict in an early 1950s Florida prison camp who refuses to submit to the system. Sam O’Steen was the film’s editor.

    Shot during emerging popular opposition to the Vietnam War, the film was widely seen as an anti-establishment classic. The film received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Newman, with George Kennedy winning for Best Supporting Actor. In 2005, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, considering it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” SAVE THE DATE!     Our April “American Cinema Editors Presents” is Billy Madison, followed by a conversation with the film's editor, Jeffrey Wolf, ACE on Friday, April 17, 6:30pm at Metrograph, NYC.

    Tamra Davis’ 1995 film Billy Madison, starring Adam Sandler, is, according to writer Ceara Milligan, a masterpiece of absurdity. The movie follows a lovable man-child on a quest for redemption and second chances, fueled by Snack Packs, a possibly imaginary penguin, and questionable academic ambition. The comedy features Bradley Whitford, Darren McGavin, Josh Mostel, and Norm MacDonald in his feature film debut — plus Steve Buscemi, Jim Downey, and Chris Farley in uncredited roles. Sandler earned a Best Comedic Performance nomination at the 1996 MTV Movie Awards for the role.

    After the screening, we'll sit down with the film's editor, Jeffrey Wolf, ACE, for a conversation about cutting comedy and his wide-ranging career. Wolf has collaborated with an extraordinary roster of directors — Arthur Penn, John Waters, John Sayles, Ted Demme, and George C. Wolfe among them — on films including Penn and Teller Get Killed, Cecil B. Demented, The Ref, Beautiful Girls, Life, and Holes.

    Join us for a screening of Jonathan Demme’s 1991 Academy Award–winning film The Silence of the Lambs, followed by a panel discussion with Craig McKay, ACE, and several of his longtime collaborators on Saturday, May 30, 3pm at Metrograph, NYC.

    The Silence of the Lambs, based on Thomas Harris’s novel, stars Jodie Foster as an FBI trainee who seeks the help of imprisoned serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) to track another murderer. A landmark in psychological thrillers, the film swept the “Big Five” Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay.
