Directed by Jason Reitman, this captivating film delves into the intense 90 minutes leading up to the first live broadcast of Saturday Night Live. The panel will feature Editors Nathan Orloff and Shane Reid, along with the Sound Team comprising Will Files, Lee Gilmore, Chris Newlin, and Dialogue Supervisor David Butler. Our final “American Cinema Editors Presents” screening for 2024 is Todd Haynes’ Carol, nominated for multiple Academy Awards, BAFTAs and Golden Globes, winner of best film from the New York Film Critics Circle and ranked by the British Film Institute as the best LGBTQ film of all time.

Based on the novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, the film stars Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett as an aspiring photographer and a married older woman who embark on a love affair during the 1952 holiday season. The film also stars Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Sarah Paulson. Following the screening we’ll be welcoming editor Affonso Gonçalves, ACE, who has cut films for Todd Haynes for the past decade, moderated by Michael Taylor, ACE.

Picturehouse 441 and ACE are proud to be partnering on a series of live virtual Q&As as part of our mutual efforts to promote film literacy.
Join us for a Q&A with director/editor/producer Howard Berry and writer/subject Walter Murch, ACE, as they discuss their 2024 documentary Her Name Was Moviola. Filmmaker and historian Howard Berry teamed up with legendary film and sound editor Walter Murch, ACE, to create this love letter to the dying art of physical film editing in Her Name Was Moviola. For this film, Berry painstakingly recreated an editing room with a Moviola and transferred Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner to 35mm in order to recut a scene from it on the machine. Detailed and delightful, this film is catnip for cinephiles who want to take a deep-dive into the art of film editing through the eyes of Murch, one of cinema’s masters.

This event will be a Virtual Screening and a Live Zoom Webinar on Tuesday, January 7 at 8PM ET/5PM PT with two encore livestreams to follow on Vimeo.

Since 1951, American Cinema Editors has celebrated the best in television and feature film editing at the annual ACE Eddie Awards gala. More than a thousand of the entertainment industry’s most accomplished editors, filmmakers and Hollywood elite attend the black-tie event held each year.

A prelude to the Oscars, the Eddies are considered a barometer for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Best Picture and Best Editing categories. The ACE Eddies is one of the longest-running awards shows in the entertainment industry.

The next West Coast "American Cinema Editors Presents" event will be a screening of the 2000 psychological thriller Memento followed by a conversation with editor Dody Dorn, ACE, at Los Angeles institution Vidiots.

Leonard Shelby is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty of locating his wife’s killer, however, is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of short-term memory loss. Although he can recall details of life before his accident, Leonard cannot remember what happened fifteen minutes ago, where he’s going, or why.
