  • Lightbox Expo 2024 – Movie Magic: Editing for Animated Films Panel (LA Event)

    Editing an animated film offers the distinct
    advantage of cutting the movie with the film's
    director before it's shot. Editors work with
    storyboards and temporary dialogue to craft and
    re-craft the story across many iterations before it
    gets locked and moves forward into production.
    Meet some of the magicians who help bring your
    favorite animated features to life! Guests will
    include Mary Blee (The Wild Robot), Susan
    Fitzer (Spellbound), Lynn Hobson (Transformers
    One), Darren Holmes, ACE (The Iron Giant)

    Join us for a Q&A with director Karyn Kusama and Editor Plummy Tucker, ACE, as they discuss their 2009 black comedy horror film Jennifer's Body. The world was not ready for Jennifer's Body in 2009. This Diablo Cody-scripted, Karyn Kusama-directed film about a possessed teen girl and her friend was so far ahead of its time that its studio, critics, and audiences didn’t quite know what to make of it. However, after the MeToo movement hit, everyone started to catch up and it underwent a critical reappraisal and developed a cult following. As directed by the reliably excellent Kusama and cut by her longtime editor Plummy Tucker, Jennifer's Body is a subversive, devilishly funny vision of the horrors men wreak on teenage girls.

    Join us for a Q&A with director Paul Greengrass and Editor Chirstopher Rouse, ACE, as they discuss their 2007 action-thriller The Bourne Ultimatum. The climactic chapter of the Bourne Trilogy also happens to be its apex. Satisfyingly closing out Jason Bourne’s quest to find out who he is and what has happened to him, The Bourne Ultimatum finds Greengrass and longtime editor Christopher Rouse, ACE (who won an Oscar for his work) working at their respective peaks and crafting some of the most extraordinary action scenes in modern film history. Employing Greengrass’ trademark docudrama-like style that made United 93 and The Bourne Supremacybefore it such hard-hitting filmic experiences, The Bourne Ultimatum is a Hollywood blockbuster that is both dramatically satisfying and genuinely thrilling.

    The late Anne V. Coates, ACE, earned an Academy Award for David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia and received an Honorary Award at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 2016 Governors Awards. She earned four additional Oscar nominations for Becket, The Elephant Man, In the Line of Fire and Out of Sight. ACE honors her contribution to the art of editing by naming this award, the "Anne V. Coates Award for Student Editing."

It’s a crime thriller and a family drama … and a musical.
