With a whip-smart screenplay by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer, this riveting film about Katherine Graham and Ben Bradlee's decision about whether or not to publish The Pentagon Papers is one of the great films about journalism, particularly calling to mind All the President's Men. Join ACE for a "smashing" screening of Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk. Hulk i is a Marvel movie directed by Ang Lee, screenplay by James Schamus, Michael France and John Turman, based on characters created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Before the formula for “superhero movie” was codified to produce a never-ending stream of lookalike, soundalike films there was Lee’s Hulk, an experiment in style employing eye-popping color, frag grenade split-screen effects, and dynamic framings — the work of legendary DP Frederick Elmes — in order to create a cinematic approximation of Jack Kirby’s original comic art. The spectacle here is built on a solid foundation of character-based oedipal struggle that recalls Nick Nolte’s earlier work in Addiction, with Eric Bana as Bruce Banner/Hulk and Nolte in fine fettle as his abusive and ultimately megalomaniacal mad scientist father. Note: this film is part of a series starring Nick Nolte. The screening will be followed by a discussion between editor Tim Squyres, ACE and VFX editor (and now editor) Gary Levy, ACE.

Few Stephen King adaptations have had the heart and soul of Lawrence D. Cohen's humane, intelligent adaptation of Carrie, which is, at its core, the story of a teenage girl coming into her own body and struggling with the pressures of high school. Director Brian De Palma brings his signature style to the film making it a visually dazzling spectacle, but the great filmmaker never lets these visual flourishes drown out the human story. Grounded by Sissy Spacek's subtle, wrenching performance as the eponymous character and further buoyed by Piper Laurie's indelible comeback performance as Carrie's religious zealot of a mother, Carrie smartly realizes that a horror film is only as strong as the dramatic story it's built upon. Few films have had as much of an effect on horror cinema as Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street. Telling the story of a group of small-town teenagers terrorized in their dreams by knife-gloved murderer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund, iconic), this classic combines clever visual effects and a memorably menacing villain to generate thrills. What makes A Nightmare on Elm Street stand far above almost all other horror films, though, is both its sheer inventiveness and genuine entertainment value. While Craven knew the importance of a real scare, he also knew that watching the film had to be a hell of a good time. Produced on a small budget by fledgling studio New Line Cinema and released to major critical acclaim and commercial success, Nightmare proved to be anything but for everyone involved. When David Lynch's TV pilot failed to be picked up as a series, he expanded it into the surreal puzzle box that is Mulholland Drive. Describing this weird, wild, wonderful film is an exercise in futility - as is trying to fully make sense of it. And that's much of the reason why this film has endured and sparked much debate. Mulholland Drive is a brain-teaser of a film that finds both Lynch and longtime producer/editor Mary Sweeney working at their respective peaks, crafting a dazzling dream of a film that is both endlessly enjoyable and haunting.
