Join us for a Q&A with director/co-writer George Miller, as he discusses his 1981 post-apocalyptic action film Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Long before Fury Road and Furiosa, George Miller redefined action cinema with his Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Continuing the saga of Max Rockatansky through the wasteland of Earth, this film gave audiences a taste of the cinematic mastery that Miller would continue to display over the ensuing four decades. Bigger, crazier, and more exhilarating than its tiny-budgeted predecessor. Edited by David Stiven, Tim Welburn and Michael Balson, this film is everything a sequel should be and is rightfully considered one of the greatest films of the 1980s.

For one night only in December, Metrograph will be a screening the director’s cut of legendary writer-director Elaine May’s 1976 triumph Mikey & Nicky, starring John Cassavetes, Peter Falk and Ned Beatty, followed by a rare in person appearance by Elaine May for a discussion with her frequent editorial and production consultant Phillip Schopper, ACE, and assistant editor on the film Jeffrey Wolf, ACE.

The editing of Mikey & Nicky is a story worthy of its own film. The years of editing, the constant struggles with the studio, the alleged stolen reels of film, the extraordinary amount of footage shot and finally buying the film back to make the definitive cut of a film that has come to be known as a classic.

Join us for a Q&A with cinematographer Alice Brooks, ASC, and editor Myron Kerstein, ACE, as they discuss their film 2024 musical fantasy film Wicked. A sumptuous, soaring ode to Golden Age Hollywood musicals with a distinctly modern sensibility, Universal Pictures’ Wicked, based on the generation-defining blockbuster stage musical, now arrives onscreen as a spectacular cinematic event. While the film is epic in scale, director Jon M. Chu and cinematographer Alice Brooks imbue it with a handmade quality that makes the film feel intimate, emotional and like a true labor of love. Our final “American Cinema Editors Presents” screening for 2024 is Todd Haynes’ Carol, nominated for multiple Academy Awards, BAFTAs and Golden Globes, winner of best film from the New York Film Critics Circle and ranked by the British Film Institute as the best LGBTQ film of all time.

Based on the novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, the film stars Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett as an aspiring photographer and a married older woman who embark on a love affair during the 1952 holiday season. The film also stars Kyle Chandler, Jake Lacy and Sarah Paulson. Following the screening we’ll be welcoming editor Affonso Gonçalves, ACE, who has cut films for Todd Haynes for the past decade, moderated by Michael Taylor, ACE.
