Handling life's changes and finding emotional closure are themes that most wouldn't associate with a film about anthropomorphic toys, but that's exactly what Toy Story 3 is. With two previous installments that were instant classics and the curse of second sequels usually being disappointments, this film had a lot going against it. But, the minute Toy Story 3 hit screens, it entered the pantheon of great films due to the obvious care, intelligence, and love poured into its creation. Filled with hilarious one-liners and new characters as well as a real emotional punch and typically strong vocal performances from its talented cast and expertly edited Ken Schretzmann, ACE, Toy Story 3 is another high point from Pixar and is one of three animated features in history to be honored with an Oscar nomination for Best Picture (it won Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song).

After teaming up for the acclaimed Coffy, filmmaker Jack Hill and star Pam Grier reunited for the wildly entertaining Foxy Brown. Proving once again that Pam Grier is a force of nature onscreen, this film about a woman who goes out for revenge against the drug dealers who killed her boyfriend is a subversive feminist statement under the guise of a standard blaxploitation film. A major influence on countless subsequent films including Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown (which also starred Pam Grier), this wonderful original holds up beautifully as a glorious ode to female power.

Join us for a Q&A with editor Jay Rabinowitz, ACE, as he discusses his work on 2000 psychological drama Requiem for a Dream. Darren Aronofsky’s second film, Requiem for a Dream, is a hellish work of drama about a group of individuals whose lives are torn apart by their drug addictions. While drug addiction films are a dime a dozen, what distinguishes Requiem from all of the other films of its kind is its complete commitment to assaulting all of the senses in an effort to bring the audience as close as possible to its characters’ broken minds and lives. Grounded by Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, and Jennifer Connolly’s heartbreaking performances, Requiem is also one of the best-edited films of all time, providing a showcase for Jay Rabinowitz’s experimental, shocking work that provides the film with much of its haunting power.

Adam Elliot has not made a feature film since 2009’s beguiling Mary and Max. The 15-year wait turned out to be well-worth it, though, as Memoir of a Snail is as personal and moving as its predecessor. Edited by Bill Murphy and brought to life by an outstanding voice cast led by Sarah Snook, this tale of the odd, dysfunctional, and darkly funny life of a woman named Grace is full of endless surprises and a deep well of emotion. Only the second R-rated film ever nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, Memoir of a Snail is an ultimately hopeful, life-affirming story of a woman coming into her own against all odds from one of the most distinctive voices working in animation today.

A total descent into darkness, Robert Eggers’ reimagining of Nosferatu proves yet again why he is one of the most distinctive and exciting filmmakers working today. For this version, Eggers insists that evil must be looked at straight on, that it’s a part of everyday life, which makes this a provocative, potent, unnerving viewing experience. And, the film is a technical marvel that looks and feels like a demented fairytale, largely thanks to cinematographer Jarin Blashke, production designer Craig Lathrop, and editor Louise Ford, all of whom have worked on every one of Eggers' four features. This Nosferatu is one for the ages: at once reverential to F.W. Murnau’s original and also daring, modern, and a vision all its own.

Tim Fehlbaum’s tense, taut film, September 5, takes a documentary-like approach to exploring the ABC Sports division’s coverage of the unfolding tragedy. Provocatively and intelligently investigating journalistic ethics and the limits of what can - and should - be shown on live television, September 5 is propelled by Hansjörg Weissbrich’s sharp editing and an ensemble of excellent performances. September 5 couldn’t be more timely and wisely stays away from coming to neat conclusions, making for a stimulating and frequently unnerving viewing experience.
