A sumptuous, soaring ode to Golden Age Hollywood musicals with a distinctly modern sensibility, Universal Pictures’ Wicked, based on the generation-defining blockbuster stage musical, now arrives onscreen as a spectacular cinematic event. While the film is epic in scale, director Jon M. Chu and cinematographer Alice Brooks imbue it with a handmade quality that makes the film feel intimate, emotional and like a true labor of love. As cut by Oscar-nominated editor Myron Kerstein, ACE, each musical number pops off the screen, and enough praise cannot be heaped upon stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, who provide Wicked with its big, beating heart.
