Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby, adapted from Ira Levin’s best-selling novel, is a hypnotic psychological thriller about modern-day witches in New York City. At its center is Mia Farrow’s Rosemary, the unwitting victim of their sinister conspiracy. The performances are inspired, particularly Farrow’s star-making turn and Ruth Gordon’s indelible embodiment of Polanski’s macabre humor as Minnie, Rosemary’s sinister neighbor. John Cassavetes is brilliant as Rosemary’s husband, a struggling actor who can hardly believe his sudden good fortune. The film was editor Sam O’Steen’s first of several collaborations with Polanski. O’Steen made the most of Rosemary’s fragile psychological state and compelling journey, as well as Polanski’s probing, unsettling camera. As O’Steen said, “He’s the best with the camera of anybody I ever worked with. I drool over the dailies.” The feeling was mutual.
